DOS COMMAND SHELLS
1 A DOS COMMAND SHELL is any program that allows users to execute DOS
commands outside of the normal DOS environment.
2 DOS BOSS utilizes DOS COMMAND SHELLS for the following:
(A) Execution of DOS commands with a minimum number of keystrokes for
improved user productivity.
(B) Execution of DOS commands by users with a limited working knowledge
of DOS to shorten the DOS learning curve.
(C) Display of DOS reference information to improve user productivity and
shorten the DOS learning curve.
3 The following conditions apply to all DOS BOSS COMMAND SHELLS:
(A) To select any DOS command, depress the menu Function Key.
F01 thru F09
(B) To display help information, depress the H Key while holding the ALT
Key.
ALT H
(C) To remove the help display, depress the Escape Key or depress the H
Key while holding the ALT Key.
ESC or ALT H
(D) To move between or within data entry fields, depress the Cursor Keys.
DO NOT DEPRESS THE ENTER KEY.
CURSOR UP
CURSOR DOWN
CURSOR RIGHT
CURSOR LEFT
(E) To move the cursor to the beginning of text at the cursor line,
depress the Home Key.
HOME
(F) To move the cursor to the end of text at the cursor line, depress the
End Key.
END
(G) To execute a selected DOS command, enter the required data and then
depress the Enter Key.

(H) To interrupt the execution of any DOS command and return to the
previously displayed menu, depress the Break Key while holding the
Control Key.
CONTROL BREAK
(I) To move between DOS COMMAND SHELL screens, depress the Page Up Key or
the Page Down Key.

(J) Printed reports may be generated for all commands with a small box
next to the menu Function Key number. Depress the P Key while
holding the ALT Key to select the PRINT option. The ALT P box should
be blinking. To execute a FORM FEED after printing, depress the F
Key while holding the ALT Key.

ALT F
(K) A small box is also used to identify file ATTRIBUTES that may be
changed. To change an ATTRIBUTE to an entered value, depress the A
Key while holding the ALT Key.
ALT A
(L) Displayed or printed directories may be sorted by depressing the S
Key while holding the ALT Key. The ALT S box should be blinking.
ALT S
A total of 5 different sorts are available and may be selected by
depressing the above keys repeatedly. Toggle through all 5 options
to deselect the SORT option. The blinking ALT S box should return to
normal.
ALT S (Repeatedly)
(1) Name.
(2) Extension.
(3) Size.
(4) Date.
(5) Time.
(M) To exit from any DOS COMMAND SHELL and return to the DISK OPERATING
SYSTEM menu, depress the Escape Key.

(N) Directories may not exceed 250. Only the first 500 directory files
will be loaded.
(O) Either of the following messages may appear at the bottom of
displayed information to indicate that additional data exists and
will be displayed upon any keystroke.

(P) The following message will be displayed to indicate that DOS has
completed execution of the current command.

(Q) For commands with displayed data entry examples, the drive will be
used as displayed unless modified. Non drive data must be entered if
required. The following is a typical example where A: is the drive.
A:PATH\FILENAME.EXT/PARAMETERS
(R) DOS BOSS will refer to both directories and subdirectories as
directories.
(S) To redisplay prompt messages or data entry examples, depress the menu
Function Key.
F01 thru F09
(T) DRIVE, PATH, and FILE NAME options may be utilized, however, a blank
data entry field will not be permitted.
(U) Displayed data entry examples will receive priority over system
defaults.
(V) To execute DOS commands outside of the DOS COMMAND SHELL environment,
depress the E Key while holding the ALT Key.
ALT E
A syntax example will be displayed for the current DOS COMMAND SHELL
menu selection. DOS BOSS will remain in memory. To return to DOS
BOSS, enter EXIT.
EXIT <ENTER>
(W) All files located in the Root Directory with names beginning with 0
or 1 should be renamed or relocated. DOS BOSS will automatically
delete these.
(X) For more information about DOS commands, refer to your DOS manual.

Options/Parameters apply to both Shell and Non-Shell environments.
* = Global Filename Character (CAUTION)
Substitute for ALL characters on either side of the period in
FILENAME.EXT
Examples: *.EXT or FILENAME.*
? = Global Filename Character (CAUTION)
Substitute for ANY character on either side of the period in
FILENAME.EXT
Examples: F???????.EXT or FILENAME.?XT

1 Select this activity to execute DOS commands outside of the DOS COMMAND
SHELL environment. DOS BOSS will remain in memory. To return to DOS
BOSS, enter EXIT. DO NOT SELECT THIS ACTIVITY TO RUN OTHER PROGRAMS.

1 Select this activity to run applications not included on DOS BOSS menus.
Usage time will be logged if the EXPANDED ACTIVITY LOG TOTAL SYSTEM option
is selected. DOS BOSS will request a confirmation of this selection.
Depress the Y Key to continue or the N Key to cancel this selection.
Y or N
Change to DOS BOSS drive and directory then enter BOSS to return to DOS
BOSS.

1 Select this activity to LOG OFF system if the EXPANDED ACTIVITY LOG TOTAL
SYSTEM option is selected.

DOS BOSS will request a confirmation of this selection. Depress the Y Key
to continue or the N Key to cancel this selection.
Y or N
Restart system to return to DOS BOSS.
FAILURE TO FOLLOW THIS PROCEDURE WILL RESULT IN ACTIVITY LOG RECORD
ERRORS.
DOS COMMAND SHELL - FILE MANAGER
1 For improved productivity and minimization of errors, entire directories
may be sorted and viewed before making any changes.
(A) Set the DEFAULT DRIVE:PATH using DOS COMMAND SHELL SCREEN 02. Select
a SORT option if desired.
(B) To VIEW, TAG, AND BACKUP FILES, depress the B Key while holding the
ALT Key.

(C) To VIEW, TAG, AND COPY FILES, depress the C Key while holding the ALT
Key.
ALT C
(D) To VIEW, TAG, AND DELETE FILES, depress the D Key while holding the
ALT Key.
ALT D
(E) To VIEW, TAG, AND MOVE FILES, depress the M Key while holding the ALT
Key.
ALT M
(F) The above file processing options may be selected and executed from
any DOS COMMAND SHELL screen.
(G) To view the prior or next screen of directory data, depress the Page
Up Key or the Page Down Key.

(H) When all data has been displayed, the following message will appear
in the MESSAGE LINE box:
*** END OF DIRECTORY ***
(I) To tag a file for processing, move the cursor to the file name and
depress the F01 Key. A small box will appear next to the file name
and the file name will be redisplayed in intensified color. To untag
this file, depress the F01 Key a second time and the file name
display will return to normal.

(J) To tag or untag all files for processing, move the cursor to the
DEFAULT DRIVE:PATH field and depress the F01 Key.

(K) To copy or move tagged files, enter the target drive and path.
(L) To process all tagged files, depress the Enter Key.
ENTER
(M) Confirmation of the above entry will be requested by DOS BOSS.
Depress the Y Key to continue or the N Key to cancel processing.
Y or N
(N) Directory data will be redisplayed upon completion of processing.
(O) The SORT option may be changed within the FILE MANAGER by using the
same procedure as outlined for SCREEN 02. If the SORT option is
changed, the ALT R box will blink to indicate that a change has been
made and the display must be reset. Resetting of the display is
optional if sorting is deselected.
(P) The DEFAULT DRIVE:PATH may also be changed within the FILE MANAGER.
The ALT R box will blink to indicate that a change has been made
and the display must be reset.
(Q) Files may not be tagged, untagged, or processed if the ALT R box is
blinking. To reset the display and the ALT R box, depress the R key
while holding the ALT Key.

(R) The file processing option may be changed within the FILE MANAGER by
using any of the following key combinations:
ALT B (File - Backup)
ALT C (File - Copy )
ALT D (File - Delete)
ALT M (File - Move )

(S) DRIVE and PATH options apply to all DOS COMMAND SHELLS including the
FILE MANAGER.
(T) A Global FILENAME.EXT may be entered for selection of specified
directory files.
(U) To move to the DEFAULT DRIVE:PATH field from any location, depress
the Home Key while holding the Control Key.
CTRL HOME
(V) To move to the TARGET OR NEW NAME field from any location, depress
the End Key while holding Control Key.
CTRL END
(W) To generate a new Tree, enter the default drive and then depress the
F03 Key.

(X) To generate a new Tree from the DOS prompt, enter the following where
D is the Tree drive. This procedure may be necessary if your system
has limited RAM (random access memory). Be sure to remove DOS BOSS
from memory first.

(Y) Tree data will be stored in the following Root Directory files where
D is the Tree drive.

(Z) To load an old (existing) Tree, enter the default drive and then
depress the F02 Key.

(AA) To move up or down the displayed Tree, depress the Page Up Key or the
Page Down Key while holding the Control Key. The current or default
directory will be displayed in the Directory Selection Window.

(BB) All files located in the Root Directory with names beginning with
zero (0) or one (1) should be renamed or relocated. DOS BOSS will
automatically delete these.
(CC) To exit to the prior menu, depress the Escape Key.
